We at NLIS had a buddy reading day today. Buddy Reading is a cooperative learning strategy in which younger and older children are grouped together. The older one reads to the younger one and together they learn how to cooperate with each other. It is an amazing way to make children familiar with each other across the grades.
For older children it is an opportunity to develop fluency as well as a sense of pride in their accomplishments. For younger children it is an opportunity to get familiar with new vocabulary, challenging text and get exposure to the books that are of higher level for their age.
It was interesting to see children reading to their buddies, forming a warm bond amongst each other and helping the younger ones with new vocabulary. A sense of pride was visible on each ones face.
