Recently our PYP 5 and 6 students visited the Department of Chemistry at University of Oslo. This department has several units with heavy scientific equipment that are staffed by technical employees who work in close collaboration with researchers in their scientific activities.

PYP 6 in their previous unit had learned about how Chemical reactions make temporary and permanent changes in matter. This visit helped them to add on to their existing knowledge and make connections with how humans use their understanding of scientific principles and the impact of scientific and technological advances on the environment.

PYP 5 as a part of their unit on Energy is currently exploring chemical energy as one of the forms of energy.  The students got a chance to see how chemical energy is stored, consumed and changed.  They further explored how energy can change its state, depending on how it interacts with other energy sources. This visit helped students to make a lot of other connections in their learning process.
